An investigation has been opened into the cause of a two-alarm fire that started in the Columbia Empire Meat Company meat processing facility in Portland, OR on Tuesday, several local news organizations reported.

Firefighters responded to the plant after the fire was reported at about 6:30 am, coverage by television news station KATU said. Workers managed to evacuate the facility safely after the blaze started.

“Crews arrived to find pretty heavy smoke coming from some roll-up doors here. This is a meat packing company, so we’ve got a lot of refrigerators and pretty industrial type equipment,” Portland Fire Lt. Rich Chatman told radio station KUPL.

Officials shut down an area covering six blocks during the response for about two hours, according to KXL-FM. Reports did not include information on estimated damages to the facility or equipment.

Columbia Empire Meat produces beef, deli, lamb, pork, poultry and veal products.
