Three members of the Kansas City Police Department and two KC Water workers were injured in a “lime dust explosion” at a water treatment plant in Kansas City, MO on Sunday, the city’s general manager, Troy Schulte, said in a post on the social media site Twitter.

The workers were injured at about 10:30 a.m. when material in an overloaded lime shaker contacted water, Kansas City-based ABC News affiliate KMBC reported, citing information from a KC Water spokesperson. After they were burned by lime slurry, the two personnel were transported to an area hospital for treatment. 

“Safety is a part of KC Water’s culture and all accidents are taken very seriously,” said the municipal water company in a statement reprintedby local television news station KSHB. “The accident will be reviewed to avoid such occurrences in the future. We are grateful the situation wasn’t worse and we will support our employees and their families as they recover.”

While one worker was released quickly, the other is expected to stay in hospital care for several days. Local media reports did not include details on how the three members of KCPD were injured. 

The City Manager tweeted that operations at the KC Water plant would resume on Monday.
