Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey and Escambia County officials attended an event on March 10 to mark the start of construction on the new Coastal Growers LLC peanut processing plant in Atmore, AL, according to a release issued by the Alabama Department of Commerce. The company is investing $87 million to build a 400,000-sq-ft facility.

“I’m thrilled for the people of Atmore, and the surrounding area, to see this facility is ready to begin taking shape,” Gov. Ivey said in a statement. “Our state has a storied tradition of peanut production, which provides an estimated $200 million to our economy.”

About 150 new jobs will be created with the opening of the site. The shelling and storage facility is expected to serve as a hub for the region’s peanut industry.

“The Coastal Growers facility will become a critical resource for peanut farmers in Alabama and beyond by helping them make their operations more sustainable and profitable,” said Greg Canfield, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, in the release.

Work on the Atmore plant is projected to reach completion in about a year.

The farmer-owned cooperative announced plans for the peanut shelling plant in September 2020, Powder & Bulk Solids reported.
