Meat, egg, and poultry recalls for the month
In the month of August, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service recalled 2 products and issued 1 health alert. This is down from both June and July with 6 recalls each.
The 2 recalls were due to possible foreign matter contamination and produced without benefit of inspection, while the health alert was due to an import violation.
Possible Foreign Matter Contamination
As we reported earlier this month, Perdue Foods recalled approximately 167,171 lb of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken breast nuggets and chicken tenders that may be contaminated with foreign material, specifically metal. Impacted product includes: 22-oz. (1.38-lb) vacuum-sealed plastic packages containing “PERDUE Simply Smart ORGANICS Breaded CHICKEN BREAST NUGGETS” with Best If Used By date of “03 23 25” represented on the back of the package; 29-oz. (1.81-lb) vacuum-sealed plastic packages containing “PERDUE CHICKEN BREAST TENDERS with Best If Used By date of “03 23 25” represented on the back of the package; 22-oz. (1.38-lb) vacuum-sealed packages containing “BUTCHERBOX Organic Chicken Breast Nuggets” with Best If Used By date of “03 23 25” represented on the back of the package. The items were shipped to retail locations nationwide and sold online directly to consumers. The problem was discovered after the firm received consumer complaints about metal wire embedded in the product and notified FSIS of the issue. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
Produced Without Benefit of Inspection
Hickory Hollow Jerky, out of Eufaula, AL, is recalling approximately 6,229 lb of ready-to-eat jerky products that were produced without the benefit of federal inspection. The beef jerky and bacon jerky products were produced on various dates between Jan. 19, 2024-Aug. 21, 2024. The products were produced without the benefit of inspection by two different owners of the establishment. Ownership changed hands on June 11, 2024. Items were shipped to retail locations in AL, FL, GA, NC, OK, and through internet sales.
Public Health Alert
FSIS issued a public health alert for various meat and poultry products that were illegally imported from the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Myanmar is a country ineligible to export meat and poultry products to the US. FSIS is continuing to investigate how these products entered the country. Affected products are: Grandma Style Sardine in Tomato Sauce 400 g, also has sticker that says Beef Curry; Grandma Style Fried Carp with Curry Paste 100 g, also has sticker that says Goat/Mutton Curry; Grandma Style Anabas Curry 130 g, also has sticker that says Duck Curry; Grandma Style Steamed Carp Fish 130 g, also has sticker that says Beef Curry; Grandma Fish with Salt 100 g, also has sticker that says Beef; Grandma Fish with Salt 100 g, also has sticker that says Mutton Entrails Curry/Goat Offal; Grandma Chickpea Curry 400 g, also has sticker that says Mutton Soup; Grandma Steamed Nga Gyin Fish 130 g, also has sticker that says Beef Curry; Grandma Carp Fish in Fermented Soybeans 100 g, also has sticker that says Chicken Curry; Grandma Steamed Duck 125 g; Grandma Catfish & Noni 120 g; Grandma Striped Catfish & Tomato Curry 400 g; Grandma Striped Catfish & Mango Curry 400 g; Grandma Striped Catfish & Tomato Curry 120 g; Grandma Striped Catfish & Mango Curry 120 g; Grandma Ohn No Khao Swe (Chicken) 400 g; San Pya Daw Kyi (contains catfish) 200 g; Hti Mi Gwi Mawlamyine Mohinga (catfish) 360 g. The problem was discovered when FSIS was performing routine surveillance activities at a retailer and found meat and poultry products from Myanmar that are not eligible to be exported to the US. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
