Japanese private label food manufacturing firm United Foods International Co. (UFI) opened its first production plant in the U.S. East Coast on July 28 and announced plans to hire about 125 workers as the facility becomes fully operational.

The new plant in Belcamp, MD will produce an array of custom Asian sauces, soups, condiments and dry blended seasonings and batter mixes, according to a press release published by the Maryland Department of Commerce. Based in Tokyo, UFI opened its first U.S. production facility in Hayward, CA in 1998.

“We are truly excited to be able to operate in a similar capacity or even more than that of the California operations and, given our geographic location, delivery is possible as quick as one to two days to all East Coast states,” the company’s chief operating officer, Takeo Shimura, said in the state commerce department’s release.

UFI will import and export materials and goods using the Port of Baltimore and said the facility’s location poses a number of advantages.
