A report said seven fire departments were called to the firm’s West Chester Township, OH plant last Saturday.

13,000 lb of ammonia vapor leaked at a Tyson Foods plant in West Chester Township, OH on Saturday, prompting a response from seven area fire departments, according to coverage by local news broadcaster WLWT.

West Chester Township’s fire chief told the station that firefighters located a valve that broke or became loose and were able to halt the leak. The official said the vapor was contained to the facility and did not pose a risk to the surrounding area.

Tyson stated to WLWT that it is investigating the incident. The plant was evacuated without injury.

Powder & Bulk Solids reported three other ammonia leaks at Tyson facilities this year. Several fire departments and a HAZMAT team responded to its chicken processing plant in Noel, MO in early 2021 after an ammonia leak was reported in the facility. This June, Some workers at the firm’s pork plant in Waterloo, IA were evacuated during a “minor” ammonia leak. Some homes were evacuated and other residents were told to shelter in place during an ammonia leak in June at Tyson’s plant in Goodlettsville, TN.
