American protein products company Tyson Foods Inc. recently wrapped up work on a $87.6 million expansion project at its Union City, TN plant, state officials announced in a release.

40,000 sq ft of space was added to the site’s footprint and several new production lines were installed during the effort.

“Customer and consumer demand for protein continues to increase so we’ve invested almost $200 million in recent years for projects that build on our strengths, expand our capabilities, and increase our capacity,” said Keith Riley, manager of Tyson’s Union City complex, in a statement. “Expansions like this help position us to grow and support our customers, and we’re glad we’ve been able to do them in Tennessee.”

The company invested $80 million to expand the Union City plant in 2017. Tyson’s latest project at the site is expected to create 230 new jobs by the end of this year.

While work on the expansion started earlier this year, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed work and announcements, the company said.

Tyson’s Union City complex has a range of capabilities, including slaughtering, raw poultry deboning and processing, par-frying of breaded poultry products, and bulk packaged and bagged fresh and frozen poultry, according to information on the company’s website.
