Grain and food ingredients firm The Scoular Company entered into an exclusive licensing agreement with Montana Microbial Products to manufacture and sell barley protein concentrate (BPC), a plant-based protein used in aquaculture feed and pet foods, a company release announced this week. The products will be sold in North America and Asia.

BPC produced through the agreement is non-GMO and clean label. Montana Microbial Products uses a patent-pending technology to manufacture the concentrate without using chemicals or solvents.

“We’re excited to work with Montana Microbial Products to commercialize barley protein concentrate and look forward to collaborating with many industry stakeholders,” John Messerich, senior vice president and division manager, Feed Ingredients at Scoular, said in a statement. “In a world of growing protein demand and an uncertain economic environment for farmers, BPC will contribute to Scoular’s mission of adding value to multiple industries with sustainable products.”

As part of the agreement, Scoular will build a new $13 million manufacturing plant that will process about 1.9 million bu/yr of barley. The company said the location of the future facility is not yet decided, but it may select Idaho because of its access to barley farms.

“After years of development and testing, we are excited to partner with The Scoular Company to get this product into the market,” Montana Microbial Co-Founder Bob Kearns said in the release.

The new plant will open by May 2021.

Scoular established a pet food ingredient subsidiary, Petsource by Scoular, last December, Powder & Bulk Solids reported. The business develops, freeze-dries, and packages high-protein pet food ingredients.
