Food manufacturer and marketer Schwan’s Company is launching a project to build a 400,000 sq ft expansion at its pizza manufacturing plant in Salina, KS, the company announced this week. The added space will contain automated pizza production lines, shipping and receiving docks, and office space.

The company’s existing 550,000-sq-ft pizza production plant and distribution center in Salina is currently marking its 50th year in operation. Tony’s and Red Baron brand pizzas are currently manufactured at the site.

“For 50 years, we have made steady investments in growing our operations in Salina, and our facility eventually became what we believe is the largest pizza production facility in the world,” Schwan’s Chief Executive Officer Dimitrios Smyrnios said in a release. “This new investment in Salina will help ensure that we can achieve our growth plans and continue to provide delicious pizzas to millions of families for decades to come.”

New production lines installed in the expansion will be capable of producing over 100 million pizzas per year. Schwan’s is also investing in technology and implementing protocols to reduce pandemic-related risks. A number of environmentally friendly features will be included in the site as well, including equipment to increase natural gas efficiencies and waste-water technology.

Schwan’s said the expansion will support growth in US and international retail and food service markets.

225 jobs will be created by 2023 to staff the new facility. Construction on the expansion is slated to start this September and become operational by December 2022.
