Food and beverage firm PepsiCo plans to close the Spitz sunflower seed processing plant in Bow Island, AB this July, impacting 53 workers at the facility

“This was a business decision based on an extensive evaluation of the long-term viability of this site and its ability to meet our increasing volume requirements for the brand, which will continue to play an important role in our North American portfolio,” the company said in a statement printed by CBC News.

PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay purchased Spitz International, the operator of the plant, in 2008. Production will be transferred to a facility in the U.S., the Calgary Herald reported.

Upgrades to the plant were completed two years ago, and the plant appears to be in good condition, the town’s mayor, Gordon Reynolds, told CBC News.

The plant on Bow Island has been in operation for about three decades.
