PepsiCo announced that it will be closing its Muncie, IN, beverage distribution plant as early as September. Employees will be sent to other plants around the area. About 100 employees work at the Muncie plant.

"PepsiCo is always evaluating our network solutions and reviewing the best possible ways to optimize our service," the statement said. "With many recent distribution changes, we have determined that in the coming months, PepsiCo Beverages North America’s operations in Muncie, Indiana will close and be redistributed to neighboring locations," said the beverage giant, in a statement to The Star Press newspaper.

Nearby locations include Indianapolis (just opened in 2020) and Fort Wayne, which are about an hour to an hour and a half distance from Muncie.

The bottling plant has been a fixture in Muncie for 98 years. According to Star Press archives, it started in 1905 as Campbell Bottling Co. and bottled various beverages. In 1925 the company became a Pepsi franchised bottler.

Operations moved to its current location in 1957, according to the paper.

With industry changes throughout the years, the plant became a Pepsi distribution location, filling area store shelves with Pepsi products.

In April this year, PepsiCo announced it was opening a bottling facility in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Also, in summer 2022, the company announced a 1.2 million-sq-ft manufacturing facility in Colorado. The new bottling plant will be three times the capacity of the nearby facility it will replace.
