Southern Louisiana Rail Facility (SLRF) is planning to start construction on a new, $11.6 million rice mill this September at the Lacassine Industrial Park in Lacassine, LA that will help local rice producers to add value to their crops, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards announced in a recent release.

“Rice cultivation and distribution has been a bedrock agribusiness for our state since its earliest days, and today I join the South Louisiana Rail Facility in announcing a new chapter in its history,” Gov. Edwards said in a statement. “The South Louisiana Rail Facility’s new rice mill will reward the hard work of more than 200 Louisiana rice farmers with added value for their operations and diversified products for international markets.”

The opening of the 15,000-sq-ft mill will create seven new jobs with an average annual salary of $43,103. SLRF will invest $10 million on equipment for the new facility. SLRF tapped Indian firm Agreeta Farmer Network to optimize the site’s logistics and prepare products for export markets.

“The South Louisiana Rail Facility is excited to partner with Agreeta to continue to provide new marketing avenues for the region’s rice growers,” SLRF Manager Mark Pousson said in the release. “This collaboration will ensure that sustainably sourced Louisiana rice is available to consumers in southwest Louisiana and beyond.”

Work on the site is slated to reach completion in January 2021. SLRF is owned by the Jefferson Davis Parish Police Jury.
