Swiss food and beverage firm Nestle plans to invest CHF 17 million, or about $20.8 million USD, in a new operations center in a suburb of Canelones, Uruguay that will also house the company’s headquarters for the country, a press release on Nestle Uruguay’s website announced July 4.

“Uruguay is an expanding market for Nestle with many opportunities to develop. The investment that we are making with the relocation of our operations is one of the most important bets in the region in the last decade,” said country manager of Nestle in Uruguay, Andreas Dürig, in a statement.

The site will contain production facility and distribution center in addition to Nestle Uruguay’s headquarters, employing some 150 workers. Production processes at the site will involve “zero use of water” and the company plans to incorporate renewable energy sources into the facility.

“The relocation of offices, factory and distribution center of Nestle in Uruguay creates greater efficiencies by having all the operations within the same location. It also boosts the growth of the business by having greater [production] capacity,” Nestle Uruguay’s release said. “The modernization of processes will make more efficient the production of soluble coffee, powdered chocolate beverages, baking premixes, and mashed potatoes.”

Nestle Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Zone Americas Laurent Frixe recently attended a ceremony to mark the beginning of construction at the facility’s future site in El Parque Industrial Zone Este.
