Nestle to Open Digitally-Focused Warehouse in UK

Swiss food and beverage giant Nestleis teaming up with transport and logistics solutions firm XPO Logistics to open a new 638,000-sq-ft distribution center in Leicestershire, UK, XPO announced in a press release. 

“We are thrilled to be working with XPO Logistics to build a flagship digital warehouse and technology laboratory ta the East Midlands Gateway Logistics Park. This is a world-first investment for Nestle that builds on a century and a half of proud history in this country,” said Nestle Director of Supply Chain David Hix in a statement. “Our partnership with XPO will encourage innovation and experimentation in our UK logistics operations and help futureproof our business.”

The company plans to install advanced sorting systems, robotics, and other automation technologies at the new facility, which is slated to open in 2020. Nestle said predictive data and intelligent machines will be integrated to speed up shipments. Its location in Leicestershire is close to a major highway, the East Midlands Airport, and a rail freight terminal. 

“Nestle has entrusted XPO with the digital architecture for its future vision. Together, we will create limitless opportunities to explores new technologies in a state-of-the-art logistics environment,” said Richard Cawston, managing director of supply chain at XPO, in the release. “The new East Midlands center will operate as both a think tank and a launch pad for XPO innovations, with far reaching impacts on the way business is done. We look forward to an inventive collaboration with Nestle.”

A number of environmentally-friendly features will also be included in the new distribution center, including LED lighting, improved ammonia refrigeration, rainwater harvesting technology, and air source heat pumps.
