Nestle Japan is known for producing a wide array of KitKat bar flavors, with some appealing to regional tastes like green tea and varieties, like baked potato, pushing the boundaries of traditional confectionery flavors. Now the subsidiary of the Swiss food and beverage firm is rolling out a particularly odd limited edition version of the bar: Cough drop flavored.
Originally reported by Rocket News, the new product, Kit Kat Nodo Ame Aji (or, “Kit Kat Cough Drop Flavor”), contains 2.1% throat lozenge powder in each serving. Nestle told the news website that the process of making the new KitKat involves kneading granules of cough drop powder into white chocolate.
The company produces hundreds of types of KitKat bars for the Japanese market and recently constructed a new KitKat production plant in the country. A Nestle spokesperson told CNN Money in July that KitKat is the best-selling brand of chocolate in the country, with sales doubling from 2010.
Featuring a popular sports broadcaster on the packaging, Nestle Japan is marketing the cough drop-flavored KitKat as a way to soothe the sore throats of over-enthusiastic soccer fans as the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Asian final qualifying match approaches. Kit Kat Nodo Ame Aji is available in Japanese convenience stores from Aug. 21 through Sept. 10, according to Rocket News’ report.
