Merck KGaA-owned life sciences firm MilliporeSigma opened its Food Safety Studio in Bellevue, WA to enable collaboration between the food industry and the company’s scientists in the development of safety solutions to quickly detect foodborne pathogents, a company press release announced Aug. 30.

“The opening of MilliporeSigma’s Food Safety Studio demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the safety of the global food supply,” Jean-Charles Wirth, head of the company’s Applied Solutions unit, said in a statement. “With this investment, we are bringing teams together in a workspace designed to foster open innovation and collaboration with the goal of becoming the leader in food safety testing.”

The firm’s customers will have access to a complete food safety workflow, testing of raw materials and finished products, and test manual and automated food safety products that are used throughout the manufacturing process. The 5300-sq-ft space also includes a Food Safety Demonstration Center used for education.

Earlier this year, MilliporeSigma acquired food safety testing firm BioControl Systems.
