The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced an E. coli outbreak linked to a specific McDonald’s burger.
CDC along with FDA, USDA FSIS, and public health officials in multiple states are investigating the outbreak of infections. Most people in this outbreak are reporting eating the Quarter Pounder hamburger at McDonald’s before becoming sick. It is not yet known which actual food ingredient is contaminated.
This comes just one week after McDonald's announced plans to sue its meat suppliers for price-fixing. Those companies are Tyson, JBS, Cargill, and National Beef Packing Co. along with their subsidiaries.
Currently there are 49 cases across 10 states, with 10 hospitalizations, including one child who developed a kidney disease called hemolytic uremic syndrome, and 1 death. There is no recall listed yet, and the CDC states this is a fast-moving outbreak investigation.

McDonald’s has pulled ingredients for these burgers, and they won’t be available for sale in some states. Most illnesses have been reported in Colorado, which has 27 reported cases, and Nebraska, which has nine reported cases, according to the CDC.
“We are very confident that you can go to McDonald’s and enjoy our classics,” McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger said on NBC’s “Today Show” Wednesday. “I want to say to our consumers that you can confidently go to McDonald’s today.”
McDonald's reported to CDC that it has stopped using fresh slivered onions and quarter pound beef patties in several states. McDonald's is proactively making these changes while investigators work to confirm the contaminated ingredient. Quarter pound beef patties are only used on Quarter Pounder hamburgers. Fresh slivered onions are primarily used on Quarter Pounder hamburgers and not other menu items.
