Chicken processor Koch Foods Inc. intends to invest $80 million in an expansion project at its Gadsden, AL production plant that will add on another production line and create some 200 new jobs, local news organizations reported Tuesday.
Officials in Gadsden approved Koch Foods’ expansion plan in a City Council meeting this week. The company said its plan will boost the Gadsden facility’s capacity by 30%, making the site one of the biggest chicken processing plants in the U.S.
“It’s going to mean a lot of jobs for the community,” the complex manager of the Koch Foods plant, Harold Hunt, told the Gadsden Times. “It’s going to mean a lot of opportunities for poultry growers in the country.”
When the project reaches completion, the plant will have a total payroll of $4.8 million, according to coverage by news website AL.com. Koch Foods plans to kick off construction on the project in the coming weeks.
Gadsden City Council members decided to provide a tax abatement to Koch Foods, reported the Times, as well as five acres of land for the project.
