Protein processor and importer JBS USA Food Company has issued a recall for 4,860 lb of raw, frozen beef products that were imported from Australia after a routine product sample tested positive for E. coli 0157:H7, the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced in a recent release.

The 60 lb. cardboard boxes of beef were imported on or around Nov. 10, 2020 and were distributed for further processing. Impacted products bear a label of “95CL BONELESS BEEF PRODUCT OF AUSTRALIA” on the packaging, as well as a “packed on” date of Sept. 2, 2020.

Distributors and meat processors in New York and Pennsylvania received the potentially contaminated products.

The food safety regulator uncovered E. coli in the products during a routine product sample. So far, no reports of adverse reactions have been linked to the products.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in cold storage at distributor or further processing locations,” the agency wrote in the release. “Distributors and further processors who received these products are urged to not utilize them.”

E. coli 0157:H7 can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps after exposure. In extreme cases, people can develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
