Japanese Firm to Build $70M Food Processing Plant in U.S.

Japanese-owned firm Fuji Vegetable Oil Inc. recently held a ceremony to mark the groundbreaking on a new, $70 million food processing, storage, and distribution complex in Jefferson Parish, LA, a press release by Louisiana Economic Development (LED) announced.

The company said increased demand for palm oil fueled its decision to construct the new facility, which will produce palm oil, palm kernel oil, sunflower oil, and coconut oil. Palm oil is used in food products, personal care products, and for industrial uses.

“We are very excited about our expansion to Jefferson Parish,” the firm’s president, Andrew Bunger, said in the LED release. “It is an important step in Fuji’s development in the United States.”

Fuji, headquartered in Savannah, GA, is owned by Osaka, Japan-based Fuji Oil Holdings. The company selected the site after assessing other locations along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts.

Starting in the fourth quarter of 2019, Fuji will begin hiring 87 workers for the Jefferson Parish site. The average annual salary of the newly-created jobs is $77,000, in addition to benefits.

Louisiana’s Economic Development Award Program will provide $250,000 to Fuji to support the project. Construction of the complex is slated to reach completion in June 2020.
