GLK Foods to Close Century-Old Sauerkraut Plant in NY
February 9, 2018
A Shortsville, NY sauerkraut production plant in operation for more than a century is slated to close later this year, the facility’s owner, GLK Foods, announced in a press release Wednesday.
“This consolidation was an extraordinary difficult business decision, and we recognize the huge impact it will on our employees and their families,” the firm’s president, Ryan Downs, said in a press release announcing the plan.
25 to 40 employees will be impacted by the closure, Ontario County Economic Developer Mike Manikowski told the Canandaigua Daily Messenger, adding that the absence of the plant in the region may negatively affect local agricultural producers.
The company said it will offer outplacement services and financial support to the Shortsville workers before the planned closure in September.
GLK Foods also announced plans to expand its Bear Creek, WI plant and said some production activities from the Shortsville facility will be transferred there.
“We are excited to expand operations in Bear Creek and are looking forward to future company advancements,” said Downs in the release. “As the long-time market leader in the sauerkraut industry, we’ve most recently seen success in our Oh Snap! Pickling Company line of pickled vegetable products, which we plan to build on.”
