Firmenich Debuts New Biotechnology Pilot Plant

Flavors and scents manufacturer Firmenich announced the opening of its new biotechnology and naturals pilot plant in the La Plaine area of Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday. The company said the new facility enables it to enter a “new era” of ingredients and clean label solutions development.

“With our new biotechnology pilot plant closely connected with the ingredients production site, Firmenich provides integrated biotech development all the way down to the finished product, without any gaps,” Genevieve Berger, chief research officer for Firmenich, said in a company release. “Opening a new era in ingredients creation, our pilot plant and laboratory harnesses new technologies to improve clean label solutions, while the latest digital innovation maximizes efficiency.”

The site allows Firmenich to have more agility in collaborations with customers and helps the company to increase speed-to-market of new solutions.

“Our new pilot plant provides greater flexibility to respond to customer needs in product development,” said Sarah Reisinger, senior vice president, research operations, at Firmenich, in a statement. “Capable of handling multiple projects simultaneously, it also enables small scale production of trial batches for formulation or testing and regulatory validation.”

Automation technology was installed in the La Plaine pilot plant to move from single to continuous batch processes, boost efficiency and speed, and reduce use of raw materials.
