]Poultry genetics firm Aviagen is launching a $35.3 million project to open a new state-of-the-art feed mill in Pikeville, TN to expand its presence in the area, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and Bob Rolfe, commissioner of the state’s Department of Economic and Community Development agency announced in a recent release.
“Our strategy is to continue to expand our local footprint, contributing to growth in jobs, while also providing quality breeding stock to our customers throughout the US and around the world,” Aviagen Chief Executive Officer Jan Henriksen said in a statement, adding, “Through this project, we share a common goal to promote the economic development of the area, while also helping chicken producers everywhere feed their communities with a sustainable and nutritious source of protein.”
Work on the Pikeville feed processing facility is slated to start this month, according to a company press release. Once operational, the facility will have a capacity of 125,000 tn/yr of feed, which will supply 18 Aviagen and 46 Grandparent (GP) farms. A number of features will be installed in the plant to eliminate pathogens and increase biosecurity.
“Our foremost priority is the health and welfare of our birds, which begins with biosecure, high-quality feed,” Richard Obermeyer, Director of Feed Production for Aviagen, said in the firm’s announcement. “The Pikeville facility joins our Sallisaw, OK and Athens, AL fleet of high-capacity, state-of-the-art feed processing facilities to keep our birds nourished with an adequate supply of nutritionally balanced feed.”
Up to 36 new jobs are expected to be created as a result of the project. In addition to boosting the firm’s position in the area, the new facility will support Aviagen’s future growth.
Aviagen’s breeding stock is sold under the Arbor Acres, Indian River, and Ross brands.
