Fire personnel were called to the Mistley Maltings malt production facility in Mistley, UK on Monday evening after a blaze started in several silos at the site, Essex Fire and Rescue Service said in a report on the incident.

Dispatched to the School Lane plant at about 6:40 pm, firefighters advised residents near the plant to shelter in place during the response.

“Residents in the Mistley area are advised to keep their windows closed and stay indoors due to an ongoing incident at Mistley Maltings,” a post on the Essex Fire and Rescue Service Facebook page said.

Crews worked into Tuesday morning to remove material from the silos and monitor temperature levels inside the containers, according to the incident report. The scene was cleared by 2:42 am. When fire personnel returned to the Mistley Maltings facility around 8 am, temperatures in the silos had returned to normal levels.

“We can confirm that there was a fire in one of our malt storage bins at our Mistley Maltings in School Lane,” Adrian Dyter, managing director of the plant’s owner, Crisp Malt, told the Clacton and Frinton Gazette. “Thankfully it was contained and no one was hurt.”

Crisp Malt acquired Mistley Maltings in 2009, increasing the company’s total production capacity to 245,000 tn, information on the firm’s website said.
