Food & beverage, pet products, cosmetics, and drug recalls for the month

Recalls were down significantly in September, with 15 covering food & beverage, pet food, and drugs. This is the lowest for the year thus far — there were 26 recalls in August, 27 in July, and June saw 29.

The food and beverage category had 11 recalls, pet food had 1, cosmetics/personal care had 1, and drug had 2.

Eight of the 12 recalls for food and beverage products were due to undeclared allergens/mislabeling; two for the potential of Salmonella contamination; and 1 for dexamethasone and chlorpheniramine tainting.

Undeclared Allergens/Mislabeling

  • Niitakaya Shiso Katsuo Ninniku & Miso Katsuo Ninniku – undeclared fish (bonito)

  • Hammond’s Candies Dark Chocolate Filled Mini Waffle Cones – undeclared milk

  • 7-11 Fudge Brownie – undeclared walnuts

  • Enjoy Premium Coconut and Taro cookies – undeclared milk

  • Bacalaitos Criollos Codfish Frying Mix 7 oz. bags – potential or undeclared fish

  • a-1 On the Go Kara Boondhi, Kerala Mixture, and Spicy Murukku snack products – potential or undeclared wheat

  • Lactaid 96 oz. carton varieties – potential or undeclared almonds

  • Grabeez Trailmix with peanuts, pretzels, and crackers – undeclared almonds and cashews

Potential of Salmonella Contamination

  • Milo’s Poultry Farms and Tony’s Fresh Market eggs – recall covers 9 states, more information here

  • Eagle Produce LLC Kandy whole cantaloupe – distributed between August 13th - 17th in MI, MO, OH, TX and VA, with UPC code 4050

Drug Tainting

  • 123 Herbals LLC Vail-Bon Jie Yang Wan dietary supplements – tainted with Dexamethasone and Chlorpheniramine. This is an unapproved new drug, so the safety and efficacy have not been established and, therefore, subject to recall.

Potential of Salmonella and Listeria Contamination

  • ANSWERS beef and chicken dog foods – Detailed Beef Formula (UPC 856554002102), Straight Beef Formula (UPC 856554002072), and Straight Chicken Formula (UPC 856554002065) in 4 lb containers

Drugs

Contaminated with Bacteria

  • CoreRX Inc. Bionpharma Atovaquone Oral Suspension, 750 mg/mL – contaminated with Cohnella bacteria, manufactured Oct. 26, 2023, with lot code 2310083.

Presence of Glass Particles

  • Gilead Veklury (remdesivir) for Injection 100 mg/vial – remdesivir is an antiviral medication used to treat COVID-19 in hospitalized patients.
