Beef and beef-by products supplier National Beef Packing Company LLC is committing $100 million to double the capacity of its Iowa Premium processing plant in Tama, IA and add a second shift at the site, a company release said Wednesday.

“We are pleased to be making this investment in the growth of the Tama facility, and we appreciate the support of the local communities and the state of Iowa as we work together to make this expansion a success,” Tim Klein, the firm’s president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “This project will increase our capacity to produce products that are in high demand by our customers worldwide and will provide an expanded market for the Iowa family farmers who supply us with premium Angus cattle.”

Once the project is completed, the plant will be capable of processing 2,500 head of cattle/day. National Beef expects to finish work on the site by late 2022.

Powder & Bulk Solids reported this week that Tyson Foods is preparing to reopen an idled case ready plant in Columbia, SC as a meat cutting and packaging operation for portioned packages of sliced, fresh beef and pork and ground beef. The company is investing $42 million to carry out the conversion project.
