Premium pet foods co-manufacturer Barrett Petfood Innovations (BPI) is teaming up with food and pet food ingredients supplier Anchor Ingredients Co. LLC to build a new freeze-frying manufacturing plant in Little Falls, MN, Anchor announced in a release this week.

The facility will be “the industry’s first centralized pet food manufacturing site for premium brands,” according to the company. Anchor and Barrett will build the freeze-drying plant near BPI’s existing 165,000-sq-ft co-manufacturing extrusion plant in Little Falls.

“We are excited to add freeze-drying to our portfolio here at BPI and offer our branded customers a one-stop shop for all their co-manufacturing needs,” Tom Barrett, co-manufacturing director for BPI, said in a statement.

Opening the new facility will allow Anchor to expand its support to customers from its current focus on developing, sourcing, and processing of raw ingredients to the co-manufacturing of freeze-dried products.

“Anchor is hyper-focused on innovation and being in a position to support the evolving and dynamic pet food industry. We are excited to now be able to manage our ingredients along the entire value chain through the partnership with BPI,” said Anchor’s co-founder and CEO, Al Yablonski, in the release.

Some other major ingredients firms have made moves to capitalize on rising interest in freeze-dried pet food products and ingredients in recent years. Grain processor and food and feed ingredients supplier Scoular announced in May 2019 that its subsidiary will build a new 105,000-sq-ft manufacturing plant for freeze dried pet food ingredients in Seward, NE.
