The acquisition of Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes expands the agribusiness’ range of functional ingredients and solutions.

American agribusiness Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) said Tuesday that an agreement was signed to acquire dietary supplements and probiotics supplier Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes, positioning the company to expand its portfolio of health and wellness solutions.

“The microbiome represents one of ADM’s six strategic growth platforms, and with global demand for health and wellness products estimated at more than $775 billion, today’s investment represents a significant step forward for ADM,” the firm’s chairman and CEO, Juan Luciano, said in a statement. “Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes is a leader in probiotic, prebiotics, and enzyme technology, with global sales and manufacturing in the US and Europe, and is a perfect fit for our functional ingredients and solutions for health-conscious consumers.”

Deerland’s 12 branded product lines include solutions to boost cardiovascular, immune and digestive health, sports nutrition products, and aid cellular repair. Their portfolio includes spore probiotics, which are used in a number of food and beverage, pet nutrition, and supplement applications.

“The hand-in-globe fit of Deerland’s vast portfolio of branded technologies, clinical studies, and world-class dosage form production capabilities, combined with ADM’s Health and Wellness solutions, is strong and unparallelled, allowing to provide our dietary supplement, food/beverage and companion animal customers with a much broader array of products and capabilities,” said Deerland’s CEO, Scott Ravech, in the release. “The Deerland team could not be more excited at the opportunity to be a part of the ADM family.”

Company officials expect the transaction to close within the next few weeks. About 320 Deerland employees are slated to transfer to ADM.

Last month, the agribusiness formed a new human probiotics joint venture with enzymes and probiotics manufacturer Qingdao Vland Biotech Group Ltd. to serve the Chinese market. In October 2020, ADM revealed plans for a new probiotics production facility in Valencia, Spain. The project is intended to boost capacity of its Biopolis microbial technologies business to five times its current output. Once operational, the site will manufacture probiotics and postbiotics using ADM’s technology. The products will be used in skin health, weight management, gut health, oral health, fertility, and other applications.
