Non-GMO and Organic food and feed supply chain solutions firm Pipeline Foods LLC recently signed a purchase agreement to acquire a grain elevator located in Atlantic, IA from agribusiness Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), the Minneapolis, MN-based firm announced in a press release last Friday.
Pipeline said the purchase of the 3.4-million-bushel facility was driven by increased demand for U.S.-grown organic grains from protein firms.
“In owning and operating another facility dedicated to organic grains and oilseeds, Pipeline Foods will have a direct relationship with farmers in the region, helping to ensure identity preservation of the product and allowing us to take ownership at the farm gate, thereby increasing transparency and traceability for all stakeholders,” Eric Jackson, Pipeline’s chief executive officer, said in a statement.
The company plans to upgrade the Atlantic site’s ability to test, clean, grade, dry, store, and ship product, and invest in new equipment before the site re-opens this coming September. Under the terms of the deal, ADM will continue its soybean origination activities at the facility in a segregated area.
“We’re pleased to be able to partner with Pipeline Foods, and look forward to continuing to work with our local farmer partners to source conventional soybeans in and around the Atlantic area,” Pete Goetzmann, regional vice president at ADM Grain, said in the release.
Following the completion of the transaction, Pipeline will operate six organic processing plants in the U.S. and Canada.
