American agribusiness Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) recently unveiled a new animal nutrition research and development laboratory in Rolle, Switzerland that will develop new feed additives for use in pet food, aquaculture, and livestock applications.

“The opening of our new laboratory is a very exciting development for ADM, enhancing our capabilities in the region, which is known for innovation,” Pierre-Christophe Duprat, president of Animal Nutrition for ADM, said in a company release issued Monday. “It complements our existing global R&D network of over 140 scientists and technicians and provides greater emphasis on ADM’s sustainability efforts by developing innovative, science-based products for our customers. By enhancing our animal nutrition business in Rolle, we will continue to strengthen the company’s commitment to solve tomorrow’s nutritional challenges.”

Staffed by a group of scientists, the new lab in the Swiss Food & Nutrition Valley will develop products that meet the sustainability objectives of the Animal Nutrition business, including the creation of feed additives with plant extracts that can lower methane emissions in ruminant animals.

ADM’s Rolle location will work to create solutions that allow producers to reduce their use of antibiotics and promote healthy microbiomes, as well as additives that boost production efficiency.

Earlier this month, the firm said it entered into an agreement to acquire dietary supplements and probiotics supplier Deerland Probiotics & Enzymes, positioning the company to expand its portfolio of health and wellness solutions. Deerland’s 12 branded product lines include solutions to boost cardiovascular, immune and digestive health, sports nutrition products, and aid cellular repair. Their portfolio includes spore probiotics, which are used in a number of food and beverage, pet nutrition, and supplement applications.
