Two workers were hurt in an industrial accident Thursday at the Premium Pet Health pet food manufacturing plant in Smithfield, VA, local news organizations reported. The employees received injuries after an ammonia pipe ruptured and they made contact with the liquid.

The Smithfield Police Department told television news station WAVY that workers were evacuated from the facility after the pipe broke. Officials said the ammonia spill was limited to the plant’s interior.

A statement by Premium Pet Health’s owner, Smithfield Foods, said the incident was accidental.

“Two employees were taken to the hospital and were treated and released this afternoon. Local emergency responders were on site and worked with Smithfield to investigate and manage the situation, which was resolved by mid-afternoon,” the company said. “As always, the health, safety, and wellbeing of our employees is a top priority, and we appreciate the support of local authorities in responding to this situation.”

The injured workers are expected to recover, Smithfield Police said in coverage by WVEC.
