Volumetric and Gravimetric Feeder Design to Ensure Reliable Flow

A technical workshop entitled, “Volumetric and Gravimetric Feeder Design to Ensure Reliable Flow,” will take place on Tuesday, May 6, from 3:15pm-4:45pm, at the Powder & Bulk Solids Conference in Rosemont, IL. The workshop will be led by Joe Marinelli, president, Solids Handling Technologies Inc.

“When handling bulk solids, the feeder design is as important as the bin design,” says Marinelli. “You can design a bin to flow reliably and attach an improperly designed feeder that will destroy the intended flow pattern from your bin.”

Feeders are used to control the rate of material discharge from a bin, silo, or hopper. Improper design of volumetric and gravimetric bulk solids feeders can lead to flow problems, process upsets, and downtime. This session will include a discussion on volumetric and gravimetric feeder design, such as design techniques for screw feeders, belt feeders, rotary valve feeders, and others.

•    Volumetric screws, belts, and rotary valves
•    Gravimetric feeding such as weigh belts, loss-in-weight
•    Feeder and bin interaction

“Proper feeder design relies heavily on knowing your material flow properties,” says Marinelli.
