German chemicals and materials firm BASF is committing $70 million to expand the capabilities of its seed treatment formulations plant in Sparks, GA, the company announced in a release Tuesday.

“We will continue to help farmers and our seed company and channel partners succeed in their operations, which includes the development of our seed treatment portfolio,” Martin Horrocks, director, Seed Treatment for BASF Agricultural Solutions North America, said in a statement. “BASF has responded to their needs by making significant investments in production to deliver effective solutions to help farmers manage pests, disease, and produce higher yields.”

During the project, BASF will add a new formulation unit and climate controlled warehouse and expand an existing lab. The new assets will enable the company to directly produce its seed treatment portfolio, including the Poncho, TWO.O and Votivo brands of corn seed treatment systems. ILEVO seed treatment products will also be manufactured at the facility.

The investment will also create 30 new full-time jobs at the Sparks plant, including production and warehouse operators, maintenance tech, and supervisory staff.

“This expansion not only provides benefits to our customers, but to our community as well,” Mark Wolverton, Sparks Site Director, BASF Agricultural Solutions North America, said in the release. “BASF bas been a proud supporter of our community for more than 35 years. We look forward to employing local residents from Sparks and the surrounding areas and continuing to contribute to the economic well-being of our region.”

Earlier this month, Powder & Bulk Solids reported that a fire broke out at a BASF agricultural products manufacturing plant in Palmyra, MO. The incident reportedly took place in an empty office building at the site.
