Worker Dies in Coke Plant Accident

A worker at the Tonawanda Coke facility in Tonawanda, NY died Wednesday morning during routine maintenance on an industrial coal elevator.

The longtime employee was a 60-year-old male. The accident occurred at about 8am, and paramedics arrived about 30 minutes later.

OSHA, which investigated and ultimately fined the plant after an explosion injured three workers in 2014, is investigating the incident. The plant was also fined in 2015 for violating the Clean Air Act.
