Man Critically Burned in Magnesium Plant Explosion

Article-Man Critically Burned in Magnesium Plant Explosion

The Salt Lake Tribune reported that a man in his 40s was critically burned in an explosion at U.S. Magnesium in Toole County, Utah, June 4.

Medical personnel at the plant, which is located near the southwest shore of the Great Salt Lake, called Tooele County dispatchers, who sent a helicopter to take the victim to the hospital, according to Bucky Whitehouse, Tooele County emergency management director.

Whitehouse said the man had been burned on his head and upper body, and had suffered inhalation burns. The man was taken from the plant to University Hospital’s burn center in critical condition.

It was not clear what had exploded or where in the plant the explosion occurred. Whitehouse could not confirm whether the man was an employee.

Whitehouse said the cause of the explosion is still under investigation, which is being handled by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
