Fire Destroys $750,000 Worth of Peanuts

A fire broke out early Tuesday morning at the GFA Peanut Co. processing plant in south Georgia that destroyed 900 tons of peanuts in a storage silo that were worth an estimated $750,000. No injuries were reported.

The blaze collapsed the roof of the storage silo. Firefighters used a remote-controlled drone to help contain the fire. The drone took pictures while hovering over the tall silo, enabling a police helicopter to drop water bags on the fire.

GFA Peanut Company LLC supplies both wholesale and retail outlets, mostly for snacks and making peanut butter. The facility is located in Cordele, GA, less than 150 miles south of Atlanta.
