Explosion at Canola Crushing Plant

An explosion and fire at the Louis Dreyfus canola crushing plant in Yorkton, Saskatchewan caused extensive damage and injured one Friday morning.

The fire occurred in a meal pellet storage area and not the main building of the canola-crushing plant. The employee was taken to the hospital with what was considered to be a minor ankle injury.

"We are investigating the circumstances of the explosion and working with the authorities," said Eleni Androulaki. "Louis Dreyfus Commodities is committed to ensuring the health and safety of its employees and the communities which it serves."

Everyone was evacuated from the site after the blast, which was felt a mile away.

Louis Dreyfus Commodities is a global merchandizer of commodities and processor of agricultural goods, including oilseeds, grains, rice, feed, coffee, sugar, etc.
