Science technologies, consumables, and services provider Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. announced the release of the world’s first net zero mass spectrometer (MS) Thursday, offering an environmentally friendly technology to scientists across a wide range of industries and disciplines.

The new Thermo Fisher Delta Q Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) was the first product developed under the firm’s IsoFootprint campaign to permanently cut CO2 emissions linked to the production and supply chain of all new IRMS products.

“The Delta Q IRMS, and our IsoFootprint initiative, is a major step forward in our commitment to supporting sustainable science,” Chris Cascella, general manager, inorganic MS and chromatography and MS for Thermo Fisher, said in a company release. “With the world in climate crisis, we want to be sure we play our part in limiting the damaging environmental impacts of climate change. By 2026, our IOMS instruments will become carbon neutral, removing 4500 tCO2e from the atmosphere each year. This is a bold, but necessary step – world-class science should not be at a cost to the Earth.”

To produce the instrument, Thermo Fisher’s Inorganic MS (IOMS) team removes and permanently stores all embodied carbon in the instrumentation using direct air capture, bio-oil sequestration, and other technologies.

“Across industries, most products come with a carbon footprint, and direct air capture provides a mechanism to permanently eliminate this,” said Steve Oldham, the CEO of Carbon Engineering, a direct air capture company working with Thermo Fisher on the IsoFootprint initiative. “It is inspiring to see Thermo Fisher leading the earth sciences field and taking steps to remove the CO2 emissions assosicted with their Delta Q IRMS product.”

Thermo Fisher said the new instrument will help scientists working in food and beverage, geoscience, and environmental science to work more sustainably.
