Dust Collector Causes Fire, Explosion at Wrigley Plant
March 19, 2015
Firefighters were called to the Wrigley plant in Chattanooga Wednesday night after a fire and explosion that officials say came from a dust collection system.
Flames were seen coming through the roof, and employees had to be evacuated from the plant. Starch used to make Life Savers and other candy products was reportedly burning.
No injuries were reported and most of the fire was extinguished by 7:30 pm. Shortly thereafter, employees began re-entering the plant.
A worker was killed at the plant in early February. An autopsy showed the victim was crushed by a machine.
Another worker died in an industrial accident at the plant in October 2013, in which OSHA found Wrigley responsible.
