American agribusiness The Andersons Inc. and biofuels process technology firm ICM Inc. announced a plan on Tuesday to build a new dry mill ethanol plant in Colwich, KS that will refine 70 million gal/yr of the corn-based biofuel.

“This investment executes on several of our stated strategic priorities, such as operating highly efficient and profitable ethanol production facilities, increasing capacity under management, developing new technologies with higher value co-products and expanding our fee-based services offering,” said the chief executive officer of The Andersons, Pat Bowe, in a statement.

The plant will be owned and operated under the firms’ joint venture ELEMENT LLC, combining technologies including the Selective Milling Technology V2 (SMT V2) and Fiber Separation Technology Next Gen (FST Next Gen) from ICM and the logistics, merchandising, and risk management resources of The Andersons.

Planned to be the “most efficient” dry mill ethanol production facility in the U.S., the companies said the Colwich site will stand out from other plants of its kind because of a variety of unique features like wood waste power and heat generation technology that lowers the site’s consumption of natural gas by some 70% and electricity by 80%, according to press releases issued by the companies.

ICM said its technologies at the ELEMENT plant will be capable of producing more than 3.10 gallons of ethanol per bushel and will also manufacture high value animal feed products.

The first phase of the plant’s start up is planned for spring 2019.
