Personal care products manufacturer Beiersdorf plans to permanently lay off 134 workers at its skin products plant in Cleveland, TN this year as it prepares to close the shut down the facility, several local news organizations reported.

A WARN notice posted to the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development’s website said the workers will be separated from the company by Sept. 29, 2021.

“Our thorough analysis showed clearly that the costs to retrofit the Cleveland facility to the infrastructure, processing and logistics requirements of other Beiersdorf products were simply too high,” Alvaro Alonso, general manager for Beiersdorf North America said in a statement printed by The Chattanooga Times Free Press.

The facility produces Coppertone and other skin care products. Alonso told the newspaper that production of Coppertone will shift to third-party manufacturers in the US.

Beiersdorf will shutter the facility by the third quarter of next year, according to local ABC News affiliate WTVC. The company has operated the plant since 2019.

“We did not arrive at this decision lightly and wish it could be otherwise,” said Alonso in the Times Free Press.
