An explosion and fire occurred at the Evonik oil additives facility in Morrisburg, ON in the early hours of December 4 that left one worker with injuries, the company announced in a release Tuesday.

The worker was taken to an area hospital for treatment after incident took place at about 12:30 a.m. Evonik said it is cooperating with authorities.

“Our company cares deeply about our people and their safety, and our first concern right now is with our employee and their family,” Owen Caves, site manager for Evonik Morrisburg, said in a statement.

The company thanked first responders for their response to the facility.

The Morrisburg plant opened in 1964 to produce acrylic sheets, according to information on the company’s website. Today the plant manufactures VISCOPLEX grade products, which help oil to flow at low temperatures and to achieve proper lubrication in high temperatures.

Officials told Nation Valley News that the hurt worker was a 26-year-old male who experienced severe burns.
