Chemicals and energy player Sasol announced Wednesday that its Sasol Chemicals business unit is preparing to install artificial intelligence (AI) technology at its chemical production complex in Lake Charles, LA that will collect data on the site’s energy usage and emissions. Once in place, the solution will enable the company to lower the location’s CO2 emissions and increase its energy efficiency.

“Technology and innovation will play a crucial role in helping us achieve our emissions reduction targets, said André Bonton, vice president of Technical Services for Sasol Chemicals America, in a company release. “We collaborate with solution providers like OPEX Group to apply proven technology that can inform our emissions reduction strategies and investments. With emissions.AI, we can get accurate data into the hands of our experts so they can make faster, better decisions that improve our performance and drive more sustainable operations.” 

The AI solution was sourced from data analytics firm OPEX, part of ERM Group. Sasol said it is the first company in the chemicals manufacturing space to deploy OPEX’s emissions.AI, a product originally developed for oil and gas facilities.

AI technology will continuously monitor the energy use of the ethylene unit at the Lake Charles complex and provide information on how to boost energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

Sasol’s implementation of the AI solution is part of its broader efforts to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% globally by 2030.
