Indian firm Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) said Wednesday that it will open a new recycled polyester staple fiber (PSF) manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh, India that will double its capacity for recycled PET.

“The expansion of PET recycling capacity is part of Mr. Mukesh Ambani’s [RIL’s chairman and managing director] vision to transform our legacy business into sustainable, circular and net zero carbon materials business and support the entrepreneurs to take risk throughout the value chain,” said Vipul Shah, COO, Petrochemicals for RIL, in a statement. “RIL is committed to the development of the entire value chain, and it shares expertise and technical knowhow with the entrepreneurs to produce top quality products at the lowest possible costs.”

With the opening of the new asset, the company’s capacity for post-consumer PET bottles will reach 5 billion. India currently has the world’s highest PET recycling rate, according to the company. As part of the initiative, RIL said it plans to encourage the establishment of new recycling facilities across the country to prevent packaging from ending up in landfills.

A partner, Srichakra Ecotex India Pvt. Ltd., will construct and operate the new plant on behalf of RIL.

“The agreement with RIL provides and excellent opportunity for Srichakra to expand its footprint into the recycled polyester staple fiber market. The alliance will propel Srichakra’s commitment to reduce plastic pollution and facilitate both organizations to advance the circular economy for plastic waste in India,” Srinivas Mikkilineni, director at Srichakra, said in the release. “RIL’s industry expertise, technical knowledge, and business assurances will allow Srichakra to research, innovate, and develop high-quality and sustainable products for RIL’s GreenGold portfolio.”
