Chemicals manufacturer and distributor Olin Corp. said Tuesday that half of its Plaquemine, LA chlor alkali plant has resumed operations following a shutdown in April 2022. The firm said the remainder of the facility will go back online in early August.

A company release detailed that Olin’s Freeport, TX facility is operating at a reduced level of power generation, but they expect to restore a portion of power generation by the fourth quarter. Epoxy resin manufacturing was restarted at the firm’s Stade, Germany plant in May after it was temporarily idled in March.

“During the second quarter 2022, Olin has experienced weaker than anticipated epoxy resin demand in North America and South America. Olin is unwilling to sell incremental volume into a poor-quality market and operating the epoxy resin facilities at less than 50% operating rates is impracticle,” the company wrote in a release. “As a result of these factors, Olin Corp. announced that it is temporarily curtailing epoxy and related upstream inputs production at its Freeport, TX and Guaruja, Brazil facilities.”

A substantial portion of Olin’s ethylene dichloride and related chlor alkali production at its Freeport, TX facility will be temporarily shut down.

The company said its actions reflect high electrical costs in Texas, poor market conditions for ethylene dichloride, and the resumption of production at the Plaquemine site.
