North American PCV resins, chlorine, and caustic soda supplier Occidental Chemical (OxyChem) is preparing to shutter its production site in Niagara Falls, NY, marking an end to more than a century of chemical manufacturing at the location, local news organizations reported this week.

A spokesperson for the Occidental Petroleum subsidiary told ABC News affiliate WKBW that the decision is due to “unfavorable regional market conditions” and recent hikes in rail transportation costs.

The Niagara Falls plant produces chlorine, hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite, and caustic soda, according to information on the firm’s website.

OxyChem will close the location in about 90 days, impacting about 130 employees and 20 contractors, the company said in coverage by The Buffalo News. The company intends to provide the plant’s workers with outplacement services, counseling, and relocation opportunities if they were appropriate.

The facility has been producing chemicals for 115 years, the News stated. It opened under the name Hooker Chemical Co.
