Crop inputs and services firm Nutrien is in the process of evaluating Geismar, LA to locate a new clean ammonia plant that will be the largest of its kind in the world, the firm announced Thursday. If the plans proceed, the facility will have a production capacity of 1.2 million mt/yr.

“Our commitment to the development and use of both low-carbon and clean ammonia is prominent in our strategy to provide solutions that will help meet the world’s decarbonization goals, while sustainably addressing global food insecurity,” said Ken Seitz, interim president and chief executive officer of Nutrien, in a statement. “Leadership in clean ammonia will play a key role in achieving our 2030 Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction goals, as part of our Feeding the Future Plan.”

The project will enter the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase and then the company will make a final investment decision in 2023. If Nutiren decides to move forward, $2 billion will be invested to build the site.

Clean ammonia produced at the Geismar plant will be supplied to the agriculture, industrial, and emerging energy markets. In addition to clean ammonia production, the facility would also capture at least 90% of CO2 emissions and permanently sequester over 1.8 million mt/yr in geological storage. Auto thermal reforming technology will be installed at the facility to further lower its carbon footprint.

“Nutrien is optimally positioned to supply global emerging clean ammonia markets and grow a pathway for a decarbonized supply chain,” Raef Sully, executive vice president and chief executive officer of Nitrogen and Phosphate for Nutrien, said in the release.
