Metal composites material maker Mitsubishi Chemical Composites America Inc. (MCCA) said Monday that it plans invest about $5 million to expand its Chesapeake, VA production facility for ALPOLIC brand composites.

The company said in a release that will add 40,000 sq ft of space for storage, shipping, and receiving activities. In 2018, the site moved to a seven-day-a-week operation schedule and added 30 new positions to the plant’s headcount.

“This expansion will support Mitsubishi’s efforts to increase its manufacturing capacity of ALPOLIC metal composite materials and meet market demand across their global operations,” Chesapeake Mayor Rick West said in a statement. “Mitsubishi is integral to the community and not only provides quality jobs, but is a valued corporate citizen.”

Another expansion project at the site reached completion in 2013, adding 22,000 sq ft of warehousing space.

“Our plant was built in 1991, and fortunately, our business has grown significantly over the years. As part of our strategic plan, adding to our capabilities is critical for continued growth,” the firm’s president and chief executive officer, Bill Yannetti, said in the release.

Construction work on the expansion is slated to begin this August.
