Firefighters worked to douse a massive fire that broke out Wednesday evening at the K-Solv Chemicals facility in Channelview, TX.

A two-alarm blaze ignited in facility at about 4 p.m. and crews worked until about 7 p.m. to extinguish the flames, Click2Houston.com reported. K-Solv’s director of environmental health, safety, and security, Mikie Sopczak, told the news broadcaster that the incident started as product was being transferred between drums.

A local ABC News affiliate said smoke from the fire was so dense it could be seen on doppler radar.

During the response, some homes and businesses were told to shelter-in-place while efforts to assess any potential environmental issues were underway.

An update posted by the company at 8:18 p.m. said the shelter-in-place order was removed and provided details on the number of staff present in the facility during the incident. K-Solv said one worker was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) sent staff to the site to monitor air quality around the site during the response.

Officials and the company are investigating the incident. K-Solv is a chemical distributor and a provider of maritime services.
