Indian conglomerate DCM Shriram Ltd. plans to increase the capacity its chemicals and sugar businesses over the next 12 to 18 months in response an anticipated uptick in demand, company officials told Indian news organizations.

“We have initiated many expansion projects in the company, mainly in sugar and chloro-vinyl chemical businesses with an estimated investment of almost Rs 1300 crore,” the firm’s chairman, Ajay Shriram, said in coverage by news service Press Trust of India (PTI)

The company intends to build a sugar distillery capable of producing over 200 kl per day and expand the capacity of its cane crushing assets by 5000 tn/day, dedicating some Rs 660 crore to the project, reports said. Capacity at DCM Shriram’s chemical plants in Bharuch and Kota will be boosted by 560 tn/day and plastics production will be expanded by 40 tn/day.

“The existing plants are running at their full capacity. This expansion will help in meeting growing demand and deriving economies of scale,” the firm said in the new agency’s report.

DCM Shriram’s chemicals business produces caustic soda, chlorine, and hydrogen according to the firm’s website. DSCL Sugar, the company's sugar business, was formed in 1997.

Executives said the expansion projects will be completed in phases.
